A Homeschooler Goes to College – with First Day Pictures!

Our first day of homeschool is happening somewhere different this year … in college! My daughter, recently a homeschool graduate, is commuting to college this fall. She attended her first student orientation this week, and was so nice to get this photo for me …

Meet my 18 year old… an always-homeschooled graduate, who likes videomaking, dance, and Youth and Government activities. June was an exciting time for us. My daughter graduated from our homeschool back in June, at our Washington State WHO graduation ceremony.

… with her friends …

… and I loved watching the ceremony. We began homeschooling, quite a few years ago now, when my daughter was four. Then, she was always collecting things …

In the elementary years, she was always making things …

Later, as a middle schooler, she was always doing science experiments in the garden …

Later, homeschooling high school gave her the time to not only get her core studies done, but also, time for … volunteering as a teacher’s assistant …

… studying Irish dance …

… and also the opportunity to develop her leadership skills, through activities, such as Youth and Government.

This picture was taken at the Youth Mock Legislature in Olympia, last May, where teens gathered in our capital, to enact the roles of the legislators and senators in state government. (By the way, this program is available in 32 states, and is sponsored by the YMCA.)

These activities led my daughter to consider a major in business management, but she has lots of time to decide for sure on her major, over the next year or so …

Homeschooling made it possible for her to discover her interests and strengths, in her own way, and in her own time, and … I can’t wait to see what this new school year will bring!
